Textbook: Algebra and Trigonometry, 3rd Ed., by Beecher, Penna & Bittinger.

Calculators: You should get a scientific calculator like the TI-30 and bring it to class. Programmable and graphing calculators are prohibited on tests and quizzes. Some tests and quizzes will be without calculators. No calculators are allowed on the final exam.

Syllabus: In Math 108 you are responsible for learning the material in Chapters 1-4 and Section 8.1. Your instructor is here to help you, but the responsibility is yours. You should know the material in Chapter R already.

Homework: Homework will be assigned but not collected. Answers are in the back of your textbook.

Quizzes: Quizzes may be given at any time. The lowest two will be dropped.

Tests: There will be 3 in class tests. Most of the problems will be similar to the homework, but there will be some problems you have not seen before. You are expected to think not just to memorize.

Final Exam: There will be a two hour comprehensive final exam.

Grades: Your course grade will be computed as follows.

  • Quizzes count 10%.
  • Tests count 20% each for a total of 60%.
  • Final exam 30%. You must get at least 50% on the final to pass with a C.

Attendance: You are required to attend all class meetings unless you are ill or have a family emergency. Attendance is enforced by not giving makeup quizzes, also any quiz that is not picked up will be converted to a zero. If you have an excused absence you need to provide me with the relevant documentation preferably before class.

Cheating: The minimum penalty for cheating is a grade of F in the course. The Dean of the College of Science may wish to take further action. There will be multiple versions of the tests and quizzes.

FREE Tutoring: The Math Department has free tutoring Sunday-Thursday evenings on the second floor of Neckers. See: http://www.math.siu.edu/helpsess.shtml. The College of Engineering also has free tutoring in certain dorms. See: http://www.engr.siu.edu/tutor.schedule.htm.

Study hard and have a great semester!
