Textbook: Algebra and Trigonometry with Analytic Geometry, 10th Ed., by Swokowski & Cole. You do not need a CD of any other supplemental materials. If any are bundled to your textbook, ask the bookstore to remove them and give you a lower price.
IMPORTANT: It is expected that your are already familar with the material in Chapters 1-5. You should know most of the formulas on the three pages starting from the inside front cover. You may be quizzed or tested on this material at any time. If you do not know algebra you should take Math 108 instead of Math 109.
Syllabus: In Math 109 you are responsible for learning the material in Chapters 6-8, Sections 9.1 and 2, and Chapter 11.
Calculators: You should get a scientific calculator like the TI-30 and should bring it to class. Programmable and graphing calculators are prohibited.
Final Exam: There will be a two hour comprehensive final exam. It is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, December 12, 10:10-12:10.
Grades: Your course grade will be computed as follows: homework 10%, quizzes 10%, three tests, 20% each, and the final exam 20%. However, you must get at least 50% on the final to pass with a C. Also, in order to get an A you must do at least 4 of the Challenge Problems.
Cheating: The minimum penalty for cheating on a test is a grade of F in the course. The Dean's Office may wish to take further action. This is a big no no. There will be multiple versions of the tests and quizzes. You may work together on the homework but the work you turn in should be your own. You are prohibited from using solutions manuals or on-line cheat sites. (If you were going to the gym to exercise would it make any sense to have a robot do the exercises for you?)
Attendance: Students are required to attend all class meetings except for illness or a family emergency. I enforce attendance by not accepting late homework, or giving makeup quizzes. I also enforce attendance by converting to zero any homework or quiz that is not picked up. So, come to class! If you have an excused absence you need to provide me with the relevant documentation preferably before class.
