Textbook: Algebra and Trigonometry, 3rd Ed., by Beecher, Penna & Bittinger.

Calculators: You should get a scientific calculator like the TI-30 and bring it to class. Programmable and graphing calculators are prohibited on tests and quizzes. Some tests and quizzes will be without calculators.

Syllabus: In Math 109 you are responsible for learning the material in Chapters 5-7, Section 8.1 and Chapter 9. Your instructor is here to help you, but the responsibility is yours.

IMPORTANT: It is expected that your are already familiar with the material in Chapters 1-4. You should know most of the formulas on the Geometry and Algebra pages near the end of your book as well as the graphs on the inside back cover. (Look for these now.) You may be quizzed or tested on this material at any time. If you do not know algebra you should take Math 108 instead of Math 109.

Homework: There will be daily homework.

Quizzes: Quizzes may be given at any time.

Tests: There will be five (5) in class tests.

Final Exam: There will be a two hour comprehensive final exam. It is scheduled for Tuesday December 12, 10:10-12:10. The location will be announced later.

 

Grades: Your course grade will be computed as follows:

  • Homework & quizzes count 20%
  • Tests count 12% each for a total of 60%
  • Final exam 20%
    The grading scale will be 90% for an A, 80% for a B, 70% for a C, etc. However, you must get at least 50% on the final to pass with a C.

    Attendance: You are required to attend all class meetings unless you are ill or have a family emergency. Attendance is enforced by not accepting late homework, or giving makeup quizzes also any homework or quiz that is not picked up will be converted to a zero. If you have an excused absence you need to provide me with the relevant documentation preferably before class.

    Cheating: The minimum penalty for cheating is a grade of F in the course. The Dean of the College of Science may wish to take further action. There will be multiple versions of the tests and quizzes. You may work together on the homework but the work you turn in should be your own.
