Purpose: The students should learn to think for themselves.

Text: Calculus, by Larson, Hostetler, and Edwards, 2nd edition. We shall cover chapters 1-4 and parts of 6. Do not buy student solutions manual.

Pretest: There will be a pretest this Friday (August 25) to make sure you have the background knowledge and skills needed for this course. It will count as a quiz grade. But, if you do not pass it you will be removed from the course.

Calculators: You cannot use calculators with symbolic integrators, such as the TI-92, TI-89 or HP-48. It is unknown if you will be allowed to use a calculator on the final exam.

Quizzes and Tests: There will be a quiz or test most Fridays. If you fail a quiz, you must come and see me within one week or your grade will be dropped to zero. On some quizzes you will not be allowed to use any calculator while on others, you will need one. A scientific calculator such as the TI-30 should suffice, but graphing calculators, such as the TI-85, are permitted.

Homework: Homework is due each day, except for Fridays. All Assignments will be posted on the course webpage. You may work together on the homework but the work you turn in should be your own. Late homework will not be accepted without a medical excuse. If your final homework average is below 50% you will receive a grade of F for the course.

Final: There will be a two hour comprehensive final exam. See http://www.siu.edu/departments/oar/examfl00.htm, for the Exam Schedule. You must pass the final exam in order to pass the course.

Grades: Your two lowest quiz grades will be dropped. Your course grade will then be computed as follows: Homework 20%, Quizzes & Tests 50%, Final 30%; subject to the other provisions of this policy sheet.

Attendance: Class attendance is required. If you cut class more than four (4) times you will receive an F in the course. To get an absence excused see me in advance, or call or e-mail me ASAP.

Cheating: The minimum penalty for cheating is a grade of F in the course. Your college dean may wish to take further action. There may be multiple versions of the quizzes and the final.
