Review Sheet for Test 3 Math 221, Fall 1998

Test covers: 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.6, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4 and 9.5.

8.2
See homework problems.

8.3
Study the word problems.

8.4
Given data, be able to set up matrices for least squares. For example, if I gave you the data table in Example 4 (page 457) you should be able to give the matrices on page 458 (top). Know the proof of Thm 8.7.

8.6
Know proof of Thm 8.8. See homework.

9.2
Given Ax=b, set up Jacobi or Gauss-Seidel methods. Do one iteration. Know when these methods can and cannot be applied.

9.3
Do LU-factorization. Use it to solve problems. Understand ill-conditioned systems.

9.4
Understand Thm 9.1. Be able to prove ``parts'' of it. Understand how QR-factorization is applied to least square problems.

9.5
Know when power method applies. Do one or two iterations.
