Homework Guidelines

1) No late homework.

2) PRINT your name, the course number, and the assignment number in the upper right corner of the first page.

3) Record the assignment in the upper left corner of the first page. Check off the ones you have done.

4) Indicate the problem number and the section number for each problem. Do the problems in order. If you skip a problem leave a blank space.

5) Trim any rough edges. Use only 8.5'' x 11'' paper. Staple all pages together.

These will make grading much easier and faster. Your cooperation is appreciated. The grader may deduct points for failure to comply. Extremely sloppy work will not be graded.

Some of the answers are in the back of the book. But, you need to show your work. If you try and "fake it" by appending the correct answer to incorrect work, you will get a zero on the whole assignment.

You may work together on homework. In fact this is a good idea, if it is done right. A study group with more than 4 or 5 members is often not effective for weaker students. The stronger students solve a problem and are ready to move on, while the weaker students copy the answer and never really understand it. In a smaller group students can really learn form each other. The better students often gain a great deal of extra insight by carefully explaining problems to weaker students.

In the "real world" it is import to be able to work with and learn from others, but nobody likes a mooch. While it is possible to fake your way through college you will only wind up unemployable.

Simply copying someone else's homework is cheating. While this can be hard to prove, if I do find out you are doing this I will press charges. This goes double for copying out of a solutions manual or from online sources. More importantly, cheating on homework makes no sense. Homework is not a big part of your grade, so the gain in cheating is small. But doing homework, getting stuck, and thinking hard, even when you do not get the problem done, are still vital to your learning. Thus, you lose a lot by taking the easy way out.
