Course policies for Differential Equations 405



Text: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, by Boyce and DiPrima, 8th Edition. (Earlier editions should be okay.)

Goals: To cover chapters 7 & 9 of the textbook, and then to study recent research papers. Some problems require the use of a computer. Parts of the tests will be held in the Mathematics Computer Lab, Neckers 258.

Homework: Highly recommended, but not due.

Tests: There will be two midterm exams. (These might be held in the evening and will be partially done in a computer lab.)
Test 1 will cover Chapter 7.
Test 2 will cover Chapter 9.

Project: You will turn in a written project and give a short presentation on it. You should makes copies for your classmates or post it on a web page.

Final Exam: There will be a two hour in class final exam. Some questions will be based on the projects.

Grades:
  • Test 1 - 30%
  • Test 2 - 30%
  • Project - 10%
  • Final - 30%

Cheating: The minimum penalty for cheating on a test or the project is a grade of F in the course, but more severe sanctions are possible. This is a big no no.
