Introduction. I am a novice interested in contemporary painting. I will review works here as an exercise in self-education. I hope to get some feedback and will post replies as time and space permit. I am trying to understand and develop my own taste and values. Examples: I like Francis Bacon and Joan Miro, but do not like Andy Warhol or Jackson Pollock. Why would I like Miro but not Pollock? I cannot articulate the reasons yet. I value talent/craftsmanship (one you develop the other you learn?). I need to know that a painting could not have been done by a six-year-old or an elephant. I like to see the brush strokes. I like tones. Art needs have a psychological impact.

At some point I will need to be able to say how much I would to pay to own a painting without waking up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night. I can be reached at msulliva (at) math (dot) siu (dot) edu. What gives art meaning and value is people communicating about art. Please do write.
