Maya Eventov

I first saw Maya Eventov's work this past Fall (2002), at the Martha Smith Gallery in Bethesda Maryland. I was quicky drawn to the colors and boldness of her Mediterranean scenes. These were large paintings (maybe 10 to 15 square feet) done in acrylic on canvas. The paint was applied heavily with a palette knife. Lot's of texture. She also had a number of oil paintings of flower arangements. These were a bit darker, but had gold outlines.

After giving her work more thought, and having seen more art, I see Eventov's paintings as decorative. Within the two series there is no evolution. Her work is nice. It hits me visually, but not viscerally. It does not make me think. Should the "I Love Lucy" prints that were showing next to them have tipped me off?

Now, I am not criticizing Eventov. She has every right in the world to make a living. And her paintings are pretty. I could see buying a smaller piece for someones wedding anniversary. But I do not think I want to spend $3-4K for art that is not thoughtful.

This past weekend (February 2003) I was browsing galleries in Dallas when I recognized some Eventov paintings in the display window at Banks Fine Art Gallery. I rang the buzzer. A voice asked if I was a decorator.

You can do a web search to see her work. I'll try to post some links later.
