High Art Down Home: An Economic Ethnography of a Local Art Market
Stuart Plattner
University of Chicago Press
Chicago, 1996

I ran into this book at Recycled Books in Denton Texas. Recycled Books is an excellent used bookstore with large selection of art books. Plattner is an anthropologist with personal connections to the art world. His book is a study of the local art market in St Louis. Since I live in Carbondale Illinois, St Louis, at 2 hours away, is the nearest major town. So, clearly I had to get this book. I think Plattner has a lot to offer the beginning collector (or in my case a wanna-be collector), regardless of where you live. I'll organize my discussion by chapter.
